Welcome To Temple Beth El!
The theme for Limmud this year is Tikkun Olam. This Jewish concept is found in the Mishnah and is defined by acts of kindness performed to perfect or repair the world. Throughout the year we are providing our Limmud students and their families with opportunities to perform community service and to contribute time and resources to organizations and people who are in need.
As Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fast approach we would like to invite the Temple Beth El Congregation to join us in a number of Tikkun Olam projects. Sunday, November 10th will be a Limmud Day of Service. Families are invited to join us as we engage in a variety of community service projects including making fleece blankets and craft kits for patients at Golisano Children’s Hospital and assembling spice bags to be used for havdallah here at Temple Beth El. There will also be an opportunity for families to spend the morning at Jewish Senior Life doing projects and engaging in activities with residents.
We will once again be serving both Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner at Asbury Dining Center and need volunteers to set tables, deliver meals and spread cheer. The guests who come for a delicious holiday meal always leave with both a full stomach and heart. Come give those who do not have a place to celebrate these holidays day a reason to be thankful.
If you like to bake, we invite you to support the Jewish Soldiers Project. For the 13th year Jewish families in Rochester can help bring the joy of Hanukkah to our brothers and sisters serving in the US military around the world and across the US. Limmud students will be making beautiful Hanukkah cards and baking to support this wonderful Tikkun Olam Project. Families are welcome to bake cookies or brownies and assemble care packages. Home baked goods need not be kosher, but be sure to label those that contain nuts. Purchased kosher baked goods are accepted as well. No amount is too big or too small. Many Jewish military communities use the baked goods provided through this project to supplement their Hanukkah events, and for Oneg on Shabbat. Please deliver your baked goods to the Temple Beth El office by December 8th and bring the Light of Hanukkah to Jewish US soldiers who will not be home for the holiday.
Limmud will once again be collecting school supplies for the Pencils and Paper Program. This Jewish Family Service program supplies a store in the City of Rochester where teachers from high poverty schools can obtain basic learning tools to help students in our community. The most needed supplies include:
As you shop for Hanukkah please consider purchasing some school supplies for students whose families can’t afford to do so. What a wonderful gift they will receive as they return to their classrooms following their holiday break. A collection bin will be in the Limmud Lobby!
Lastly, we always welcome contributions to the Limmud Scholarship Fund. Through your continued generosity we will be able to award need-based scholarships to Limmud families.
